I thought both podcasts were very well done. Jimmy Vee's positive attitude is infectious. I also thought the podcast on the "midget" word ban was great food for thought. Glad that LPA/NOSSA's statements sparked so much public debate. Perhaps a few folks are now aware that many little people don't care for that word. David, your a real sonofabeach but we still love you :)
ReplyDeleteI hope Im a son of a beach... ;-) And thanks for the compliments. Now, to get more listeners...
ReplyDeleteDavid-
ReplyDeleteI haven't had the opportunity to listen to both podcasts as of yet, but did listen to the one on the "m" word.
I mentioned this before in another post. It is the double standard I can't stand. Why is it okay to offend one group, whule remarks about another group will get you in trouble ( as you referred to the plant..a "wandering jew")? Insult a member of any race or religion (although I think a comment about a Christian won't get you into too much hot water) and you get reprimanded, if not terminated; but insult someone's weight or height which could also be offensive or put them in a very uncomfortable situation and...it's "get over it".
I think, nowadays, in this country, the short and overweight may be the most oppressed groups; in large part due to the fact there isn't the same amount of recourse. We are supposed to sit and be subject to a hostile environment or endure insults such as "midget" and smile about it.

Ohhhh insults are one thing.. but thats the intent. But, to use the word isnt always an insult, in my opinion. So..using the term " wandering jew" for a plant... was a joke about the plant, and I was reprimanded. Falsely. To remove the "m" word... will either only give rise to another word, or strengthen the power of the word when used as an insult. Look at what has happened to the term to define african-american...( is that the current accepted term ? and... what does that mean - accepted term ? ) The m word is now the name of a car and a candy to name two...
ReplyDeleteThere is a definition for female dog that is completely acceptable in the vet's office and assorted dog shows... yet, very unacceptable in general society. Do we then change the name of a female dog ? If someone wants to hurt your feelings there will always be a plethora of words available... why not limit the words that hurt? Yes.. short and overweight are the most oppressed groups around...proven time and time again... but..dont you think there are people offended by those terms ? Why is being called.. the "m" word..anymore insulting than being called " short ?" why is fat any different than overweight ? Its all words... Are you hurt any more when I would say..hey fat guy... than hey overweight guy ? So...its not the words... its the need to describe at all... and..we are all different..so descriptive words help. There was a cambridge police officer accused of racism recently and HE didnt even use a descriptive term..which cops use terms to describe perps/responders/citizens all the time. He didnt and was accused. I just wish we could not be bothered by tags and more concerned by intent... I think the world should be pleasant and gay (and of course I mean happy but why do I even need to clarify ? )
